RevOps: What Revenue Operations Is and Why It Drives Faster Growth
RevOps aligns sales, marketing, and CS around a single revenue engine. What it means in practice and how to implement it.
RevOps solves a problem most companies have and don't name: marketing, sales and support work from different data about the same customer.
The result is that nobody can say, with certainty, where the money comes from.
What the problem looks like
Marketing reports 200 leads. Sales say they received 60 and that 40 were useless. Support has customers marketing doesn't know exist.
All three are right within their own system. None has the full picture.
What RevOps does
Unifies definitions. What is a lead? What is a qualified lead? When does it become an opportunity? It sounds bureaucratic until you realise three teams use three definitions and argue over numbers that aren't comparable.
Unifies the data. One place where a customer is one row, with everything that happened: where they came from, what they read, who spoke to them, what they bought.
Removes manual work between teams. Most commonly: someone copying data from one system into another. It's the clearest sign RevOps is missing.
Makes one funnel. Not a marketing funnel plus a sales funnel, but a single one, from first contact to renewal.
Where to start
1. Draw a customer's current path, with the systems they pass through. You'll almost certainly find two or three places where data is copied by hand.
2. Write the definitions down and ask all three teams to confirm them. That's where the disagreement surfaces.
3. Pick one system as the source of truth. Usually the CRM. Everything else syncs to it, not the other way round.
4. Automate the handoffs. A qualified lead moves to sales automatically, with all the context. No copying, no "I sent you a lead" email.
When it's worth it
Above roughly 15 people across marketing and sales, or when reporting has become a monthly negotiation.
Below that, it's too much structure. A five-person company needs a clean CRM, not a function.
The sign you need it
Ask marketing and sales, separately, how many leads there were last month. If the numbers differ by more than 10%, you already have the problem.
