What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO is the practice of making your brand visible in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Here's how it works and why it matters more than traditional SEO in 2026.
SEO gets you into the results. GEO gets you into the answer.
That distinction isn't academic. When someone searches for "best automation agency in Bucharest", they increasingly don't get ten links — they get a paragraph written by an AI that names two or three companies. If you're not in that paragraph, ranking fourth doesn't help you.
What actually changed
AI-generated answers now appear in roughly 45% of Google searches and cut clicks through to websites by as much as 58%. Traffic that used to reach you stops at the results page.
Who gets cited changed too. In classic search you had to be on page one. In AI answers, a page ranking third can be cited over the one ranking first if it's more clearly structured — these systems select passages, not pages.
Why you are or aren't cited
Three things matter, in this order:
- Structure. Every important claim has to work when lifted out of context. A paragraph that opens with the answer rather than the wind-up is far more likely to be extracted.
- Verifiability. Numbers with sources, quotes with a name and a title, dates. Princeton's research on Perplexity found that adding statistics lifted visibility by ~37%, and citing sources by ~40%.
- Presence off your own site. Brands are cited 6.5× more often through third-party sources than through their own domain — Wikipedia, Reddit, trade publications, review sites.
One thing actively hurts: keyword stuffing, by around 10%.
What to do tomorrow
Take the five questions clients ask you most often and write, for each, a 40–60 word answer that stands on its own. Put it at the top of the section, not the bottom. Add one sourced number wherever you have one.
Then find out where you stand: ask ChatGPT and Perplexity exactly what a client would ask, and see who gets recommended. If your competitors show up and you don't, you already have the list of things to fix.
What GEO isn't
It isn't a new set of meta tags. Google states plainly that no special markup is required to appear in AI Overviews — those features run on the same ranking signals as ordinary search. Nor is it writing a separate version "for the AI": content produced specifically for crawlers falls under their spam policy.
It's closer to the discipline of writing clearly and backing up what you claim. Which you should have been doing anyway.
